General George Gordon Meade

General George Gordon Meade

George Meade, born in Caldiz, Spain was a marine engineer and oversaw the construction of several lighthouses, including the Cape May and Barnegat lighthouses. Meade served in three wars; most notably in the Civil War where he commanded the Army of the Potomac and lead Union forces to victory at the battle of Gettysburg. Future President Ulysses S. Grant had Meade appointed to Major General.
