Laura Matilda Towne

Towne was an educator, abolitionist and homeopathic physician from Pittsburgh. At the outbreak of the Civil War she moved to South Carolina and opened the first school for freed slaves with her friend, Ellen Murray. They went on to adopt several of the children that they taught. The school remains in existence today and was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1972.
