Pistols, Poisons, Prisons, and Persons of Interest

As Sherlock Holmes observed in The Copper Beeches, “It is my belief, Watson,… that the lowest and vilest alleys in London do not present a more dreadful record of sin than does the smiling and beautiful countryside.” Laurel Hill Cemetery just might be the most perfect spot in Philadelphia to see the truth in Holmes’ opinion. The bucolic landscape and soaring Victorian monuments belie the stories of murder, deception, larceny, and violence buried within. This true crime tour will bring visitors to the numerous final resting places of criminals, victims, and those whose lives and deeds remain a mystery to this day.

During this two-hour walking tour, visitors will be presented with the facts in each case before having the chance to discuss and deduce over a light reception back in the cemetery’s gatehouse. Meet the wealthy heiress and suspected victim of a poisoning, whose case helped birth modern forensics. Meet the victim of a gun duel fought over a woman’s honor… and the man who shot him. Meet a headless corpse, a good old fashioned con artist, and Laurel Hill’s only victim of grave robbery - among many other stories. Bring a sense of adventure, and a keen eye for detection. Deerstalker caps and calabash pipes are (of course) optional, but highly encouraged!

The tour will take place on Thursday, May 9 at 6:00pm, departing from Laurel Hill Cemetery’s Gatehouse entrance at 3822 Ridge Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19132. Free parking is located in the lot across the street from the Gatehouse.

The cost is $20/person; or $18/students and seniors and $17/members. Advance registration is requested. Tickets should be purchased online.
