Memorial Day Ceremony

Special Event, Sunday, May 29 at 12 PM

The traditional Decoration Day service of the Grand Army Meade Post #1 will be recreated at historic Laurel Hill Cemetery, the site of the first Memorial Day Observance in Philadelphia in 1868. Special guests, honor guards, and the public will gather at the resting place of General George Gordon Meade, hero of the Battle of Gettysburg, to perform the traditional service honoring all veterans who fell defending the nation.

The event is presented by The Friends of Laurel Hill & West Laurel Hill Cemeteries, the General Meade Society of Philadelphia, and Patriotic Sons of America, Washington Camp. Refreshments will be served after the ceremonial proceedings.

Pricing/Registration: FREE and open to the public, but RSVPs are requested; a $5 donation in support of the Friends of Laurel Hill & West Laurel Hill Cemeteries is appreciated.

GETTING HERE

  • We encourage taking public transit, biking, or being dropped off across from the Gatehouse entrance at 3822 Ridge Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19132
  • Please follow event parking signs and see below for further parking information.

PARKING

  • Vehicle access to the cemetery will be restricted to entering at the Central Entrance off of Hunting Park Avenue and the auxiliary gate on Ridge Avenue after 10:30 AM
  • Limited parking is available in the open lot areas across from the cemetery (please be mindful of construction vehicles)
  • Limited parking also available within the neighborhood.
