19th century doctors had little to offer patients suffering from the ubiquitous digestive ailments and deadly diseases of the time, treatment mostly being worse than the complaint itself. The dilemma was fed and exploited by a long parade of astute businessmen, greedy charlatans, and quacks. A number of individuals eternally rest at Laurel Hill who were active participants in the manufacturing, advertising and distribution of the patent medicine trade, including one whose family was in the business for almost a century.
