Graveyard Getaway: Sleepy Hollow Cemetery and Kensico Cemetery in Westchester County, NY

Friday, September 20, 2019 ALL DAY

First stop is the historic Kensico Cemetery founded in 1889 which sits on 461 acres of gorgeously landscaped grounds. The cemetery was built outside of New York City at a time when overcrowding was forcing the dead away from Manhattan. This site eventually became home to countless notables, including Danny Kaye, Ayn Rand, Lou Gehrig, Sergei Rachmaninoff, and more recently Elie Weisel. The tour will take place partly on our bus and partly walking between gravesites in order to cover all of the ground necessary at this enormous site.

Following the tour at Kensico, we will take the bus into Tarrytown where we will have lunch at Sunset Cove overlooking the new Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge (formerly known as the Tappan Zee Bridge) along the Hudson River. After lunch it is a quick ride to Sleepy Hollow Cemetery the fictional home of the “Headless Horseman” from Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Sleepy Hollow Cemetery was originally founded in 1849 and now serves as the final resting place of Walter Chrysler, Samuel Gompers, Andrew Carnegie, and of course Washington Irving himself. This site has become a staple of the Halloween season for cemetery fans so be sure not to miss your chance.
