Cinema in the Cemetery: Glory

Cinema in the Cemetery: Glory

Movie Night on Friday, June 17 from 8:30 to 10:30 PM at Laurel Hill Cemetery

This event is part of our 2022 Juneteenth programming, which is free to the public. The Juneteenth programming also includes To Set Them Free: An Abolitionist Walking Tour of Laurel Hill on June 19th and a virtual panel presentation titled Glory, the United States Colored Troops, and Laurel Hill: Remembering the Past on June 21st.

Pack a picnic, gather some friends, and enjoy an evening under the stars! As the sun sets over the historic tombs, the grainy joys of the film experience will be brought to life during the Friends of Laurel Hill & West Laurel Hill Cemeteries’ annual Cinema in the Cemetery series.

In honor of Juneteenth and the many Civil War connections at our cemeteries, June’s feature film will be Glory directed by Edward Zwick and presented in conjunction with the Philadelphia Film Society.

About the film: Glory (1989) is an American historical war drama film about the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, one of the Union Army’s earliest African-American regiments in the American Civil War. It stars Matthew Broderick as Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, the regiment’s commanding officer, and Denzel Washington, Cary Elwes, and Morgan Freeman as fictional members of the 54th. The film depicts the soldiers of the 54th from the formation of their regiment to their heroic actions at the Second Battle of Fort Wagner. The screenplay by Kevin Jarre was based on the books Lay This Laurel (1973) by Lincoln Kirstein and One Gallant Rush (1965) by Peter Burchard and the personal letters of Shaw.

Please note this film is rated R.
