Marking Our 175th Anniversary,
                    Laurel Hill Cemetery, 1836-2011

In 2011, Laurel Hill Cemetery will realize a significant achievement in our long and intriguing history: the celebration of our 175th Anniversary! The Friends are preparing to seize this Milestone as a key opportunity to advance our National Historic Landmark site to the next stage in its evolution.

Priority Milestone Initiatives, to be implemented and completed by the end of our Anniversary Year, comprise:

1) Special Programming: New offerings will include a monthly lecture series; observances of the Civil War Sesquicentennial in collaboration with the Civil War History Consortium of Philadelphia; a special television taping of the Humanities on the Road program series of the Pennsylvania Humanities Council; and Jubilee events marking the days of Laurel Hill Cemetery's founding and first burial.

2) Restoration and Preservation Projects: Plans include the re-establishment of the Medallion Gardens, the Cemetery's oldest section just rear of the Old Mortality statuary group, to its original grandeur as a landscaped retreat of winding pathways and bountiful horticultural specimens. Additional projects include the installation of memorial benches at the Cemetery's K Point, offering spectacular vistas of the Schuylkill River; the installation of monuments at key, unmarked gravesites, including that of the Drinnan Family, the Cemetery's first Superintendents and workers; and the planting of 175 new trees throughout Laurel Hill.

3) Promotions: In additional to the production of special informational literature, the Friends will be developing limited edition Anniversary merchandise; and publishing a commemorative booklet to mark this occasion. Tentatively titled 175 Years of Reflections, Laurel Hill Cemetery, 1836-2011, this pocket-sized text will include personal recollections and artistic representations – both historic and contemporary – on or about Laurel Hill. We welcome your submissions to this important project! To find out more about how you can contribute, please read our Submission Guidelines.
